An AQL Pass Can Still Be the Wrong Moment to Release a Shipment

An AQL pass can still be the wrong moment to release a shipment. This anonymized field note shows why a buyer should read the inspection evidence as well as the final pass/fail result before paying the balance or arranging FBA delivery.

The numbers were inside AQL. The decision was not automatic.

In this finished-goods inspection, the agreed limits were Critical 0, Major 2.5 and Minor 4.0 under normal inspection. The sample was 315 units. No critical defects were found; the report recorded 6 major and 19 minor defects, below the acceptance limits of 14 major and 21 minor.

Passing AQL did not erase the pattern of findings.

The report did not describe one isolated flaw. It recorded several workmanship and finishing observations, including weak stitching, loose thread ends, holes and surface finishing issues. Some were minor; some were major. A pass result meant that the sample was within the pre-agreed statistical limit. It did not mean every buyer instruction had been met, or that the goods should leave without a documented response.

For an Amazon FBA seller, this distinction is practical. A defect can still cause an inbound problem, customer return, negative review or rework cost even when the order passes AQL. The inspection result is a decision input, not an automatic permission to release the shipment.

Three questions before releasing payment

1. Where did the findings occur?

Ask whether defects came from one colour, carton, production batch or repeated process point. A total defect count does not answer that question.

2. What was corrected?

Require photo evidence and a clear list of what was repaired, replaced or removed. In this case, corrective work was completed before the inspector left.

3. What risk remains after correction?

Release only when the remaining risk fits the sales channel and your tolerance. For FBA, label, carton and quantity checks still require their own confirmation.

Use AQL to set a threshold. Use the evidence to make the commercial decision.

Before booking a China pre-shipment inspection, state what would block shipment even if the AQL count passes: unreadable FNSKU labels, incorrect carton marks, missing accessories, a functional failure, one unacceptable visual defect, or a repeated issue in a key colour or size.

This gives the report a useful answer: not only whether the count passed, but whether there is enough evidence to release the order.

Three instructions worth placing on the booking form

• Photograph every major defect and identify the affected assortment. This prevents a summary from hiding a concentrated problem in a sale-critical variant.
• Do not release the shipment until corrective action is recorded. Use this where finishing, labels, carton marks or function are more important than the numerical threshold alone.
• Check marketplace requirements separately from AQL. AQL sampling is not an Amazon FBA compliance checklist. FNSKU, carton labels, polybag warnings and shipment preparation should be stated as separate scope items.
