Why it matters
Why FBA mistakes are expensive after inventory arrives overseas
An FBA shipment is unforgiving because Amazon's receiving process does not negotiate. Cartons either scan or they raise an exception. An FNSKU that does not match the listing makes units unfulfillable. Packaging that fails in the fulfillment center becomes a damage or inbound claim — and you pay for it. By the time any of that shows up, your goods have crossed an ocean, cleared customs, and been counted into inventory — and your options are expensive.
The usual failure modes we see after arrival:
- FNSKU problems. Missing labels, labels on the wrong side, an SKU that does not match the listing, or a barcode that will not scan at speed. Amazon may relabel or may not; either way you lose time and money.
- Carton label and carton mark errors. Wrong case pack, wrong dimensions, missing handling marks, or a label that contradicts what is inside.
- Retail packaging defects. Crushed boxes, torn shrink wrap, missing inserts, or artwork that does not match the approved version.
- Polybag issues. No suffocation warning, wrong warning language, or bags that are too thin for the product.
None of these are visible on a shipping document. All of them are visible at the factory, which is the whole point.
Timing matters as much as the check itself. The four windows where an FBA inspection earns its keep:

What Amazon FBA inspection in China actually checks
Amazon FBA inspection is not a separate fixed service type with its own rulebook. It is a combined buyer checklist that we run inside a normal inspection — pre-shipment, during production, or loading supervision — with the FBA-specific items added on top. That is an important distinction: you are not buying an "FBA product" from us, you are buying a quality check that also covers the things Amazon cares about.
There are four pillars, and in practice defects cluster in predictable places.
1. AQL product quality
This is the workmanship and function check done on a statistically valid sample, using the AQL levels agreed in the checklist. We look at workmanship (finish, seams, solder, stitching, assembly), function (does it work, does it hold, does it operate the way the spec says), quantity, size, color, accessories, and manuals. Typical failures: a color that drifts from the approved standard, a size that is off by a few percent, a missing accessory, or a manual that is the wrong version or wrong language. 2. FNSKU and labeling
Every unit-level label matters: presence (is it there at all), placement (correct face, correct position, not over artwork or barcodes), SKU match (does the FNSKU correspond to the listing and the product inside), and barcode readability (does it scan cleanly, is it the right symbology, is it large enough, is print quality good). The most common failure is a label that is present and looks fine but does not scan — or a SKU mismatch between cartons in the same shipment.

3. Retail packaging and polybag warnings
We check the retail pack as the customer and the fulfillment center will see it: box integrity, print and artwork match, inserts present, seals and shrink wrap intact, and any bundled items correct. For polybagged units we also check the suffocation warning (presence, language, and size rules you specify), bag thickness, and seal condition. Packaging is where "it looked fine in the photo" turns into a one-star review about a crushed box — or an inbound hold for a missing warning label.
4. Carton marks, labels, and packed quantity
At the carton level we verify carton marks and labels, packed quantity per carton, and the SKU mix — that each carton contains what the label claims, and that the mix matches your plan. A carton that says 24 pieces but holds 23 is a small error that becomes an inventory reconciliation problem later. Photo evidence is captured throughout so you can see what the inspector saw.
The outcome is a report with a clear pass / fail / hold result and photos. A hold usually means the defect is fixable and you decide whether to rework, negotiate, or ship with a concession.

Choose the right inspection stage
FBA checks can run inside several inspection types. They are not competitors; they answer different questions.
- Pre-shipment inspection (PSI). The standard end-of-production check, usually when the goods are 100% packed. This is where most FBA label, packaging, and carton checks happen. See our pre-shipment inspection in China.

For a typical FBA seller the sequence is: audit a new supplier, run a DUPRO on the first big order, PSI before the balance and pickup, and loading supervision for high-value or high-risk shipments.

What to prepare before the inspector arrives
Good preparation is the difference between a smooth day and a report full of "unable to verify." Before the inspector arrives, make sure:
- The goods are ready at the agreed stage — do not book a PSI on goods that are still in production.
- The FBA label files and carton label file have been sent, and the supplier has applied them as specified.
- Product photos and the approved sample or golden sample are available for comparison.
- The checklist is agreed — AQL levels, the specific FNSKU and packaging requirements, and any SKU-specific rules.
- The factory contact knows the date and where the goods will be staged for sampling.
